The Cambridge CELTA is one of the world’s foremost initial qualifications for people who wish to become professional teachers of English language. It is accepted throughout the world by organisations which employ English language teachers.
Cambridge works with international ELT organisations to ensure the acceptance of CELTA globally.
More than 10,000 candidates complete a CELTA course each year.
CELTA courses are run across the world. In Brazil, Cultura Inglesa is one of the centres that has been running CELTA courses the longest.
Candidates come from diverse backgrounds. Many are recent university graduates, others possess qualifications as teachers in different subjects or have established careers in other fields but seek a change.
For most candidates, the CELTA certification marks the first steps toward a long-term career in English language teaching. The CELTA program caters to individuals who aspire to work in the field of English Language Teaching (ELT), whether within their own country or abroad. Some candidates may have short-term motivations for teaching English and choose to enrol in a CELTA course to acquire the necessary confidence and skills for professional English teaching.
The CELTA certification is well-suited for students engaging in gap year programs that involve teaching English to adults.
It is advisable for candidates to have an educational background equivalent to the requirements for entry into higher education. However, centres may exercise discretion and accept candidates without formal qualifications at this level, provided they can demonstrate suitable language competence, skills, and experience. Generally, candidates should be at least 20 years old, although those aged between 18 and 20 may be considered at the discretion of the centre.
Applicants are not required to have English as their first language but should possess a C1 level of English proficiency, enabling them to teach at various proficiency levels.
CELTA courses are designed for people with no previous teaching experience. During the course, candidates develop familiarity with the principles of effective teaching and a range of practical skills for teaching English to adult learners. The course includes teaching practice, observation of experienced teachers in the classroom and completion of a range of practically focussed written assignments.
The course programmes are designed by individual centres, based on specifications produced by Cambridge.
The assessment is continuous and integrated taking place throughout the course and both assessed components contribute to the overall grade.
Any one assessment can cover a number of topics and objectives in the syllabus.
To meet the course requirements, candidates are required to attend/participate in a course and:
– practise teaching for a total of six hours: candidates teach for a total of six hours, working with classes at two levels of ability. The assessment is based on the candidate’s overall performance at the end of the six hours.
– observe experienced teachers teaching classes of English language learners for a total of six hours, three hours of which may be of filmed lessons
– maintain and submit a portfolio of all coursework including all written assignments (there are four written assignments. Two assignments explore aspects of teaching and learning English at adult level, one involves work on the language system of English and one is a reflection on classroom teaching) and materials related to teaching practice.
There is no final examination. An external assessor, who is appointed by Cambridge, moderates each course before results can be released.
The certificate is awarded to candidates who meet the course requirements and whose performance meets or exceeds the criteria in the assessment components.
Candidates may be ineligible for the award in cases where dishonesty or plagiarism is brought to the attention of Cambridge.
Successful candidates receive a Certificate awarded by Cambridge. The centre also provides a report on performance and achievement for each candidate, with further professional development points.
Cambridge places great importance on the quality of all its examinations and assessment services. To help ensure that all CELTA courses are run to the same standard
CELTA courses are run in accordance with an equal opportunities policy to ensure that they are accessible to all candidates who meet the entry requirements.
